Apples

For the last two weeks, we have been learning about apples. Through several hands-on activities, the children have had the opportunity to explore apples in several different ways.

Throughout the two weeks, we read several nonfiction books about apples. We learned about the different parts of an apple and that there are many different types of apples. We tasted three different types of apples to see which one we liked the best.

 

We tasted Red Delicious, Golden Delicious, and Granny Smith apples.

After graphing our favorite apple, we found out that the Granny Smith apple was chosen as the class favorite!

Next, we did a little experiment using an apple. We split the apple in half and put lemon juice on one of the halves. The children made predictions about what they thought would happen to the apple slice with lemon juice. Some of the predictions included:

• It will grow
• It will turn green
• It will turn into a body 
• It will grow into more apples 

We made drawings on the first day of each of the halves. At the beginning of the experiment, the two halves looked very similar to each other. However, after two days, the two halves looked very different. We came to the conclusion that if you put lemon juice on a sliced apple, the flesh will not turn as dark. Here are the two apple halves that we observed. 

We used apples as stamps and printed with them using red and green paint. We also explored the colors of apples (red, green and yellow) through paint. 

Finally, we learned that you can make many different types of foods using apples. Throughout the week, we tasted apple butter, apple juice, apple cider and made our very own homemade applesauce! 

This week, we will be wrapping up our study of apples and begin to learn about fall, trees and leaves. We will observe the changes that are occurring around us. We are headed to the Pumpkin Farm on Tuesday to kick off our study of fall and all of the fun things that come with the changing of the seasons.
